Weekend at Autocamp Yosemite

Weekend at Autocamp Yosemite

This past weekend my family went Airstream Camping at Autocamp in Yosemite. It was such a fun and unique experience! Calling it camping is a bit of a stretch; it is most definitely glamping, but that was perfectly fine by me. You get to sleep in a real bed, have a proper bathroom, and are provided with the same amenities you would get in a hotel.

We drove up on Friday afternoon and got there around 6pm. It’s typically about a 3 to 3.5 hour drive from San Francisco, but we hit some traffic on the way up there. We shared a site with one Airstream and one tent (each had a king bed), which was perfect for the 4 of us. The location has a nice atmosphere and everything is very aesthetically pleasing. The clubhouse is open 24/7 and was all lit up once it got dark. There’s plenty of places to sit and hang out around there, and they also have a pool and corn hole. It was hot during the day but it gets cold at night, so definitely pack layers for sitting around the fire in the evening.

The most authentic “camping” part of the experience is that you get to cook your own food on the campfire at your site. We grilled steaks and vegetables for dinner on Friday night, followed by s’mores of course. On Saturday morning we cooked bacon, sausages, and eggs. We had some trouble keeping the fire warm only using charcoal, but the Kingsford Instant Match Light bags were lifesavers. We went shopping beforehand and brought all of our own food and drinks, which we were able to keep in the mini fridges in the Airstream and tent. They also sell a lot of drink and snack options in the clubhouse, but you definitely pay premium prices for the convenience.

My brother and I had to leave on Saturday morning to get back to the city, so we just had breakfast and went on a walk before we left. My parents stayed for another night and went into Yosemite Park on Saturday afternoon, which is obviously a big attraction for people staying at Autocamp.

Autocamp sites seem to be popping up all over (other locations include The Russian River, Zion, and Joshua Tree). I highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking to disconnect and be close to nature but still have a nice relaxing vacation.
